About me

About Me

Hello! I am a passionate and experienced math tutor with over 20 years of dedicated teaching experience. I have had the pleasure of helping students of all ages and abilities to excel in mathematics. As a certified Cambridge IGCSE and IB Math tutor, I have specialized knowledge in these curriculums. Additionally, I have successfully tutored students in the USA Math Curriculum, SAT Math, and Canadian and Australian Math, making me well-versed in various international educational standards.

My Experience

My journey as a math tutor has allowed me to work with students from elementary school to university level, witnessing their growth and accomplishments in the subject. Whether it’s providing individualized attention to struggling students or challenging advanced learners, I am committed to helping each student understand and master the concepts of mathematics effectively.

My Teaching Philosophy

I firmly believe that active engagement is the key to learning math. To achieve this, I employ a diverse range of teaching methods to keep my students motivated and interested:

Problem-solving

I present my students with stimulating and challenging problems that require them to think critically and apply their knowledge effectively. Through this approach, students develop valuable problem-solving skills that can be applied to various real-life situations.

Visualization

Understanding abstract mathematical concepts can be daunting, but I use diagrams, graphs, and other visuals to make these concepts more accessible and comprehensible to my students.

Scaffolding

Building a strong foundation is crucial for success in math. I start by teaching the fundamental concepts and gradually progress to more complex topics, ensuring a gradual and comprehensive understanding of the subject.

Differentiation

Every student is unique, with their own strengths and weaknesses. I tailor my teaching methods to accommodate individual learning styles and address specific challenges, ensuring that each student receives the support they need to thrive.

The Math Courses I Cover

I specialize in tutoring the following math courses:

Cambridge IGCSE Mathematics Tutoring

In my Cambridge IGCSE Mathematics tutoring, I focus on preparing students for the Cambridge International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE) Mathematics examination. This curriculum is designed to develop students’ mathematical skills and understanding while also fostering their ability to apply these concepts in real-world situations.

The tutoring sessions include a comprehensive review of all topics covered in the Cambridge IGCSE Mathematics syllabus. I cover areas such as:

  • Number: Integers, fractions, decimals, percentages, ratios, and proportions.
  • Algebra: Equations, inequalities, functions, graphs, and simultaneous equations.
  • Geometry: Basic geometrical concepts, angles, triangles, circles, and polygons.
  • Statistics: Data representation, probability, and statistical analysis.
  • Trigonometry: Sine, cosine, tangent, and trigonometric ratios.

Throughout the tutoring process, I provide ample practice exercises and past examination papers to strengthen the students’ problem-solving skills and reinforce their understanding of the subject matter. I encourage active participation, ask challenging questions, and provide step-by-step guidance to help students develop their confidence in tackling complex mathematical problems.

International Baccalaureate (IB) Mathematics Tutoring

I offer comprehensive tutoring for various International Baccalaureate (IB) Mathematics courses, including both the Middle Years Programme (MYP) and the Diploma Programme (DP). These courses include:

  • IB MYP Math: This program focuses on building a strong mathematical foundation and fostering critical thinking skills in students aged 11 to 16. Topics covered may include algebra, geometry, probability, and data analysis.
  • IBDP Analysis and Approaches (AA) Higher Level (HL): This course is designed for students aiming to pursue mathematics or related fields in higher education. Topics covered include functions, calculus, and statistics.
  • IBDP Analysis and Approaches (AA) Standard Level (SL): Similar to the HL course, but at a slightly lower level of complexity.
  • IBDP Applications and Interpretation (AI) Higher Level (HL): This course is tailored for students interested in applying mathematics to practical scenarios, covering topics like modeling, statistics, and financial mathematics.
  • IBDP Applications and Interpretation (AI) Standard Level (SL): Similar to the HL course, but at a slightly lower level of complexity.

My tutoring approach for IB Mathematics involves thorough coverage of the syllabus, in-depth explanation of mathematical concepts, and extensive practice with past papers and challenging problems. I encourage students to think critically, make connections between different mathematical concepts, and apply their knowledge to real-world scenarios.

USA Math Curriculum

In my USA Math Curriculum tutoring, I provide comprehensive support for various levels of math courses commonly taught in the United States. These include:

  • Elementary and Middle School Math: Covering fundamental concepts such as arithmetic, basic algebra, geometry, and data analysis.
  • High School Math: Including Algebra I, Algebra II, Geometry, Trigonometry, Pre-Calculus, and Calculus.
  • SAT Math: Assisting students in preparing for the SAT Math section, which evaluates their mathematical skills and problem-solving abilities.

My tutoring approach for the USA Math Curriculum involves identifying each student’s strengths and weaknesses and tailoring the sessions accordingly. I break down complex topics into manageable parts, ensuring a strong foundation in the subject. I use real-world examples and interactive exercises to make the learning process engaging and relatable. Regular assessments and feedback are integral to monitoring progress and making necessary adjustments to maximize student success.

SAT Math Tutoring

In my SAT Math tutoring, I focus on preparing students for the mathematics section of the SAT, a standardized test widely used for college admissions in the United States. The SAT Math section assesses students’ problem-solving abilities, mathematical reasoning, and application of concepts.

  • Heart of Algebra: Linear equations, inequalities, and systems of equations.
  • Problem Solving and Data Analysis: Ratios, proportions, percentages, data interpretation, and statistics.
  • Passport to Advanced Math: Quadratics, polynomials, functions, and complex numbers.
  • Additional Topics: Geometry, trigonometry, and more.

In SAT Math tutoring, I emphasize time management, test-taking strategies, and approaches to effectively handle different types of math questions. Regular practice tests are conducted to build familiarity with the exam format and boost confidence. I also offer personalized feedback and guidance to help students improve their weak areas and optimize their scores.

Canadian, Australian Math, and Basic Mathematics

For Canadian and Australian Math, as well as Basic Mathematics, my tutoring approach is tailored to the specific curriculum requirements of each region. I cover foundational math concepts and progressively advance to more complex topics, ensuring students develop a solid understanding of the subject.

For Canadian and Australian Math, the focus may include arithmetic, algebra, geometry, trigonometry, calculus, and statistics, depending on the grade level.

In Basic Mathematics tutoring, I provide a thorough understanding of fundamental concepts like numbers, operations, fractions, decimals, and percentages. This forms a strong basis for more advanced math topics.
